Overview

Avinor manages and operates the majority of Norway's civil airports, serving as a central hub for many companies, partners, and thousands of employees across many operational roles. The complex nature of airport management requires smooth collaboration and precise information sharing among all groups involved, irrespective of their specific employer. The main challenge Avinor faced was ensuring every employee, from ground staff to operational managers, had immediate, consolidated access to the necessary, role-specific operational data required for a productive workday. The goal was to unify disparate information channels into a single, modern, and high-performance digital tool to improve synchronization and overall airport operational smoothness.

Our Solution

Seven Peaks developed a full-featured, mobile-first digital platform that functions as the unified Avinor Mobile Intranet. The solution delivers a suite of digitized tools and a key central information hub, providing the workforce with instant access to vital operational intelligence.

Main features include:

  • Role-Based "Today's Feed": A customized operational news feed, aggregating real-time updates, operational messages, weather conditions, and advanced flight data tailored specifically to the user's assigned role and location within the airport ecosystem.

  • Appified Operational Tools: Important tools and data previously scattered across many intranet or extranet websites were fine-tuned, centralized, and "appified" for superior user experience (UX) and performance on mobile devices.

  • Consolidated Platform: The app serves as a single source of truth, replacing fragmented access points and allowing employees to make informed decisions quickly, directly leading to increased productivity across Avinor's airports.

Our Approach

The way we implemented the solution focused on creating a resilient and scalable technical architecture capable of handling the high volume and diversity of data required for airport operations.

  • Developing an API Gateway (Middleware): To successfully handle the large amount of information flowing in from many disparate source systems and services, Seven Peaks designed and implemented a centralized API Gateway. This middleware layer acts as an intelligent data handler, normalizing and routing information requests.

  • Decoupling and Speed: The use of the API Gateway was helpful in managing the complex structure of diverse data sources. It enabled the rapid rollout of new features and services by decoupling the mobile application from the underlying legacy systems, significantly reducing the risk of implementation and increasing agility.

  • Mobile-First UX Optimization: The entire solution was developed with an absolute focus on user-friendliness and high performance on mobile devices, ensuring that essential information is always accessible and intuitive, regardless of the employee's location on the airfield.

Challenges to Overcome

The project's primary obstacles stemmed from the environment's complex structure and the diverse groups of people involved:

1. Information Fragmentation and Diversity:
Avinor's data was scattered across many services and systems, and different employees (often from different companies) required specific subsets of the information. This challenge was overcome by developing the centralized API Gateway to ingest and distribute role-specific data effectively.

2. Maintaining Performance with High Data Volume:
Processing and delivering real-time operational news, flight data, and weather reports from multiple backend sources needed to be fast and reliable. The solution addressed this need by fine-tuning the data flow through the API Gateway, ensuring that only necessary, tailored information is displayed instantly within the mobile app.

3. Consolidating Tools for User-Friendliness:
The challenge was to transform important but often clunky web-based operational tools into a modern, easy-to-use mobile format without losing functionality. This issue was solved through a dedicated mobile-first UX approach, where tools were redesigned and fine-tuned for peak mobile performance and usability.
