Jason’s 1st KFAM Journey: Impactful Volunteering in Thailand

This past January, a dedicated team from our office, led by our CEO, Jostein Aksnes - who has personally been a founder member and core volunteer with Kharma Family for over 15 years joined 21 fellow volunteers on a journey to Omkoi in the remote highlands of Northern Thailand. The trip marked a special milestone as KFam’s 20th anniversary. For two decades, this volunteer driven organization has been improving access to education and opportunities for children in rural communities across Thailand.

What Sets KFam Apart Is Its “Boots on the Ground” Approach

Instead of simply sending aid, the team personally surveys each village, understands its real needs and then shows up ready to work alongside the community. From January 24th to 27th, 2026 the team traveled deep into Mae Hae area in the Omkoi district, navigating long and demanding terrain to reach Pi Tu Kee School, a government school serving the local Karen community. For many on the team, this wasn’t their first time. But for Jason, one of our newest members, it was. Here’s how he describes the experience in his own words.

The Journey Itself Is Part Of The Story

The journey itself is part of the story. We travel into rural Thailand, away from the noise and comfort of daily life. The roads get rough. The signal disappears. And somehow, that’s when things start to feel clearer.” The role as a volunteer isn’t complicated, it's to bring joy, play games, share meals and laugh with the kids. Create moments that remind them they matter. You’ll see it instantly: the smiles, the energy, the way a small gesture can light up a whole afternoon. And what you get back is far greater than what you give.

And then there are the quiet moments. Sitting together at night, talking, reflecting, sometimes singing off key around the bonfire. “You look around and realise who you're sharing this with, volunteers from all backgrounds and nationalities. Professionals, military, some self-confessed workaholics who never switch off. But everyone's just present, connected by a shared goal of making a huge difference. Those are the times you realise something shifted inside you.

Because KFam isn’t just about helping others. It resets your perspective. It strips away the noise. It reminds you what actually matters.” “The funny thing is, once you’ve done it, you don’t really stop. You come back. Not because you have to but because you want to. The people, the kids, the shared purpose… it stays with you. At some point you realise: this isn’t just volunteering. It’s family. And once you’re part of the Kharma Family, you’re part of it for life. -Jason Broomfield, Senior Engineer.

Conclusion

Even the smallest act of kindness can create something far greater than we imagine. Because at the heart of everything we do, we believe every child deserves a smile and sometimes, that’s where big change begins.
